Star trails #1 - Mosteiros islets

This sea/skyscape image showing the Mosteiros islets (São Miguel islandAzores) and a series of star trails across the sky was made on August 20, 2012, just hours after the passage of the Hurricane Gordon between S. Miguel and Santa Maria islands. Given the fact that the weather conditions were so good, it was hard to believe that a hurricane had just passed. But after a storm comes a calm, they say.

Included in the star trails are stars belonging to the constellations of Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, Canes Venatici, Coma Berenices, Boötes, Draco, Corona Borealis, and Hercules. At the upper right corner with the shortest trail is Polaris, the North Star.

This image was obtained by stacking a total of 350 photographs. [Exif]

Milky Way #1

This photo of the Milky Way was made in the Ponta do Escalvado viewpoint (Várzea, São Miguel, Azores), just 20 hours after the passage of the Hurricane Gordon... Extraordinary night! While contemplating the night skies I realized that we're really small in the Universe. [Exif]

Ribeira dos Caldeirões #3

Yesterday, I returned to the Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park (Nordeste, São Miguel, Azores). This time the weather conditions were favorable, but the small river now has little running water ... Anyway, here's one of the photos I took. I've to return to this place next autumn / winter, when there's more water. [Exif]

São Vicente Ferreira #1

Today, it was still dark when I left home. I went directly to Nordeste in order to take some photos that I had in mind... and hoping that the weather was better there. Unfortunately, it was raining across the island and Nordeste wasn't exception, leaving me with no other alternative than returning back. Following the north coast of São Miguel island (Azores), I found a break in the bad weather in São Vicente Ferreira. I took the opportunity to make this photo. It's a long exposure using a 10 stop neutral density (ND) filter and a 2 stop hard graduated ND filter. [Exif]

Mosteiros islets #1

Since very young age, I've always had a fascination with the Mosteiros islets. Located in the northwestern part of São Miguel island (Azores), the Mosteiros are well known for their epic sunsets: the clouds, the sea, the islets and the golden light makes the perfect scenario! In this case, I took this photo during the so called blue hour (or twilight hour), when the stars start to shine and most photographers start to pack up... ;) [Exif]

Forest #1

I took this photo in one of the trails that allows to walk along the top of the hillside of the Sete Cidades crater, also known in portuguese as "cumeeiras". In the begining of the trail there is a very dense forest of cryptomerias, where is possible to breathe pure air! During the trail is possible to contemplate beautiful landscapes. Sete Cidades is widely recognized as an ex-libris of São Miguel island (Azores). Recently, the Lagoon of Sete Cidades was voted one of "The Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal". [Exif]
